Why Finding a Medicaid Therapist in Las Vegas Takes So Long

About 711,000 Nevadans have Medicaid or Nevada Check Up, roughly 1 in 4 people in the state, and most live in Clark County. Nevada also ranks near the bottom of the country for mental health workforce. Medicaid pays therapists less than most private insurance, so many small practices limit Medicaid spots. Online listings go stale fast, and “accepts Medicaid” on a profile doesn't always mean “taking new Medicaid clients this month.”

Step 1: Know Which Medicaid You Have

Look at your cards. Everyone on Nevada Medicaid gets a state card. If you also carry a card with a plan name, such as Anthem, CareSource, Health Plan of Nevada, Molina, or SilverSummit, you're in managed care, and you need a provider in your plan's network. If you carry only the state card, you're likely on fee-for-service, and any provider enrolled with Nevada Medicaid works. Not sure? Call Nevada Medicaid at (702) 668-4200.

Our Insurance and Cost guide explains managed care and fee-for-service in more detail.

When you call member services, ask for three things: in-network therapists or psychiatrists accepting new patients, providers offering telehealth, and help from a care coordinator if nobody calls you back. Most plans offer care coordinators for members who get stuck.

Medicaid and Nevada Check Up for Kids

Nevada Check Up covers kids through age 18 in families earning too much for Medicaid, up to 205% of the federal poverty level. Premiums run $25 to $80 per family per quarter, with no copays, and mental health care works the same as Medicaid. Kids on Medicaid also get Healthy Kids (EPSDT) benefits through age 20, covering medically necessary mental health care, including ABA therapy for autism. Apply at accessnevada.nv.gov or call (702) 486-1646.

Seven Ways to Get Seen Sooner With Medicaid

  1. Call your plan, not only the offices. Ask member services for in-network providers accepting new patients.
  2. Ask for a supervised intern. Interns bill Medicaid and often have openings sooner.
  3. Say yes to telehealth. Video opens up providers across Nevada.
  4. Ask about a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners prescribe and often book faster than psychiatrists.
  5. Get on two or three waitlists, and ask to be called if someone cancels.
  6. Bridge the gap with primary care. Many family doctors and community health centers prescribe common antidepressants while you wait.
  7. Let us do the calling. Tell us your plan, and within 24 hours we'll email you providers who take your plan and have openings.

Medicaid Work Requirements Start in 2027

Starting January 1, 2027, many adults ages 19 to 64 who got Medicaid through expansion need to show 80 hours a month of work, school, job training, or volunteering, checked at renewal. Renewals also move to every six months. About 250,000 Nevadans got notice letters in September 2026.

Exemptions include pregnancy, parents of kids under 13, people in substance use treatment, and people who are medically frail, a group including many people with serious mental illness.

Two Stories From Around the Valley

These stories are examples, not real people or reviews.

Marisol, East Las Vegas

Marisol, 29, works the cage at a downtown casino and has Molina. She called six offices from her plan's list. Four didn't answer, and two had no openings until spring. After a late shift, she filled out our form and listed her plan. The next day, she got an email with two in-network therapists with openings. She started telehealth with Tyler, a supervised intern, the following week.

Andre and Eli, North Las Vegas

Andre's son Eli, 8, has Nevada Check Up. His teacher kept calling about meltdowns in class. Andre told us Eli's plan, his age, and Andre's work schedule. Within a day, we emailed him two child therapists in their network with after-school openings. Eli now sees Maria, an LMFT, every Thursday, and the meltdowns are shorter and fewer.
