Group Therapy
Group Therapy, Support Groups, and IOP in Las Vegas
Sitting in a room with people who get what you're going through changes things. Group therapy costs less than individual sessions, works as well for many concerns, and shows you other people in Las Vegas feel the same way. Here's how therapy groups, free support groups, and intensive outpatient programs differ, and where to find each across the valley.

Group Therapy, Support Groups, and IOP: What's the Difference?
| Type | Led by | Typical schedule | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Therapy group | Licensed therapist | Weekly, 60 to 120 minutes | About $30 to $80 a session, often covered by insurance | Anxiety, depression, social anxiety, grief, anger, life changes |
| DBT skills group | Trained DBT therapist | Weekly, about 2 to 2.5 hours, for 6 months or more | Varies, sliding scale at UNLV | Intense emotions, BPD, self-harm, impulsive choices |
| Support group | Peers, sometimes a facilitator | Weekly or monthly, often drop-in | Free | Ongoing connection, families, recovery, grief |
| Intensive outpatient program (IOP) | Treatment team | About 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for several weeks | Usually billed to insurance | Symptoms too strong for weekly therapy, or stepping down after a hospital stay |
| Partial hospitalization program (PHP) | Treatment team | About 4 to 6 hours a day, up to 5 days a week | Usually billed to insurance | Needing daily structure without staying overnight |
Does Group Therapy Work?
Yes. A 2021 review of 329 randomized trials with more than 27,000 patients found group and individual therapy worked equally well across 12 conditions when the treatment and number of sessions matched. Group also offers something individual sessions don't: hearing your own struggle in someone else's words, and practicing new skills with real people.
What to Expect at Your First Group
- A short intake or screening first, so the group fits you
- Usually 5 to 10 people in a therapy group, plus one or two leaders
- Ground rules on confidentiality: what's said in group stays in group
- No pressure to share on day one. Listening counts
- The same group each week, so trust builds over time
Nervous? Nearly everyone feels nervous before a first group. Tell the leader, and they'll help you ease in.

Two Stories From Around the Valley
These stories are examples, not real people or reviews.
Rosa, East Las Vegas
Rosa, 45, is a housekeeper at a downtown hotel. After her mother died, she stopped sleeping and stopped calling friends. Weekly therapy felt out of reach on her budget, so she joined a free grief group at Nathan Adelson Hospice and went every week for two months. Hearing other people say what she felt, Rosa says, made the grief feel less lonely.
Jordan, Summerlin
Jordan, 19, took a semester off at UNLV after panic attacks and a short hospital stay. Weekly therapy wasn't enough at first, so Jordan started an adult IOP three mornings a week. After six weeks, Jordan moved to a weekly anxiety group co-led by Tyler, a supervised therapist intern, and went back to classes in the spring.
What Group Therapy Costs in Las Vegas
