What the OCD Test Measures
The OCI-R asks how much 18 common experiences bothered you over the past month. Your answers add up to a total score and six area scores: washing, checking, ordering, obsessing, hoarding, and neutralizing. A total of 21 or higher is the usual cutoff for OCD symptoms worth a closer look.
OCD Is Not Being Neat
Plenty of people like a tidy desk. OCD is different. OCD brings unwanted thoughts causing real distress, followed by urges to check, wash, count, or repeat until the distress eases, for a little while. Then the loop starts again.
What to Do With Your Score
If your score is at or above 21, or one area stands out, talk with a provider who treats OCD with exposure and response prevention (ERP), the most effective therapy for OCD. Our OCD guide explains how ERP works and how to find ERP therapy in Las Vegas.

OCD Test FAQ
Is this OCD test accurate?
The OCI-R is a well-studied screening tool used by therapists and researchers. A screening shows how much symptoms bother you. Only a licensed provider diagnoses OCD.
What score on the OCI-R suggests OCD?
A total of 21 or higher is the usual cutoff for OCD symptoms worth a closer look. A high score in one area matters too, even when the total is lower.
Is hoarding part of OCD?
Hoarding used to be grouped with OCD. Today, hoarding disorder is its own diagnosis, though the two sometimes appear together.
Do intrusive thoughts mean I'm dangerous?
No. Unwanted thoughts about harm, sex, or religion are common in OCD. The distress you feel about them is the opposite of wanting to act on them. ERP helps these thoughts lose their power.
Can teens take this OCD test?
This test is built for adults 18 and older. Parents are welcome to use our parent checklist for teens and talk with a provider who works with teens.
