OCD Treatment and ERP Therapy in Las Vegas

OCD is more than liking things clean. OCD is a loop: an unwanted thought, a wave of fear, and an urge to check, wash, count, or ask for reassurance until the fear fades, for a while. The good news: OCD responds well to a specific therapy called exposure and response prevention (ERP). This guide explains OCD, how ERP works, and how to find ERP therapy in Las Vegas and Henderson.

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder has two parts.

Obsessions

Unwanted thoughts, images, or urges showing up again and again and causing real distress. Most people with OCD know the thoughts don't make sense, but the thoughts still feel urgent.

Compulsions

Actions or mental rituals done to calm the distress or prevent something bad: checking, washing, counting, repeating, avoiding, or asking for reassurance. Relief comes fast and fades fast, so the loop repeats.

OCD affects about 1 in 40 adults at some point in life. OCD often starts in childhood or the teen years, and OCD is treatable at any age.

Common OCD Themes

Having a thought doesn't mean you want the thought. People with OCD get stuck on the thoughts most at odds with who they are.

In Las Vegas, OCD shows up in everyday places: avoiding slot machine buttons and casino door handles, checking the stove before every graveyard shift, or rereading every work text before sending.

Why OCD Goes Untreated

A 2025 International OCD Foundation report found people wait an average of about 7 years for an OCD diagnosis. In the records studied, only about 2% of people with OCD received documented ERP, the most effective therapy for OCD.

General talk therapy often isn't enough for OCD, and reassurance makes the loop stronger. So finding a provider trained in ERP matters.

How ERP Therapy Works

Exposure and response prevention teaches your brain the feared outcome isn't coming, by facing the fear without doing the compulsion.

  1. 1.Map the fears. You and your therapist list situations from mildly uncomfortable to hard.
  2. 2.Start small. You face an easier situation, such as touching a door handle at a gas station.
  3. 3.Skip the ritual. You don't wash, check, or seek reassurance. You let the anxiety rise and fall on its own.
  4. 4.Build up. Step by step, you work up the list.
  5. 5.Practice between sessions. Real change happens in daily life, with your therapist coaching you.

ERP feels hard at first. Most people do weekly sessions for about 12 to 20 weeks, and many notice real change within the first couple of months. Intensive programs and telehealth ERP are options too. ERP by video works well, so an ERP-trained provider anywhere in Nevada is within reach.

Medication for OCD

SSRIs such as fluoxetine, sertraline, and fluvoxamine help many people with OCD, often at higher doses than for depression, and they take 8 to 12 weeks to work fully. Clomipramine is another option. For moderate to severe OCD, ERP plus medication often works best. A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner manages OCD medication.

Two Stories From Around the Valley

These stories are examples, not real people or reviews.

Lena, Summerlin

Lena, 31, is a dental hygienist. Outside work, she avoided gas pumps, elevator buttons, and her own car door handle, and she washed until her hands bled. In ERP with Daniel, an LCPC, she started by touching a grocery cart without wiping the handle. Twelve weeks later, she filled her own gas tank and drove home without washing.

Marco, North Las Vegas

Marco, 19, studies at CSN. A thought about hurting his little sister scared him so much he stopped babysitting and spent hours searching online for reassurance. His first telehealth session with Maria, an LMFT, was the first time he heard the words “intrusive thoughts.” With ERP, the thoughts lost their grip, and he's back to picking his sister up from school.

OCD and ERP FAQ

What is ERP therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy for OCD. You face feared thoughts and situations in small steps without doing compulsions, and the fear fades over time. ERP is the most effective therapy for OCD.

How do I know if I have OCD?

OCD involves unwanted thoughts causing distress, plus actions or mental rituals to calm the distress, taking up an hour or more a day or getting in the way of life. Take our free OCD test, then talk with a provider.

Is OCD the same as being neat or organized?

No. OCD brings unwanted thoughts and real distress. Liking a tidy home isn't OCD unless fear and rituals drive the behavior.

Can OCD be cured?

Many people with OCD improve dramatically with ERP, medication, or both. OCD symptoms sometimes return during stress, and the skills from ERP help you handle flare-ups.

How long does ERP therapy take?

Most people do weekly ERP sessions for about 12 to 20 weeks. Intensive programs move faster.

Does insurance cover ERP therapy in Nevada?

Yes. ERP is billed as regular therapy, so Nevada Medicaid, Medicare, and most employer plans cover ERP with an in-network provider.

Does ERP work by telehealth?

Yes. ERP by video works well, and telehealth lets you see an ERP-trained provider anywhere in Nevada.
