What Does an LCSW Do?

LCSWs assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions. They provide individual, couples, family, and group therapy. Social work training adds a wide lens: an LCSW looks at your whole situation, including family, work, money, housing, and community.

LCSWs work in private practice, hospitals, schools, community mental health centers, the VA, and hospice. Many specialize in trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, or substance use.

LCSWs do not prescribe medication. When medication helps, an LCSW works alongside a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner.

How Someone Becomes an LCSW

  1. Earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
  2. Complete supervised clinical practice after graduation. In Nevada: at least 3,000 hours over at least 24 months.
  3. Pass the national clinical exam, given by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB).
  4. Apply for the clinical license through the state board.

LCSW vs LPC: What's the Difference?

Both licenses provide therapy and diagnose mental health conditions. The difference is the training path.

LCSW: a master's in social work. Training centers on the person within family, community, and social systems, plus case management and advocacy.

LPC: a master's in counseling. Training centers on counseling theory and therapy skills. Nevada calls this license an LCPC, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

For most clients, the individual therapist's experience and fit matter more than which license they hold.

LSW, LMSW, LISW, and LCSW

Nevada issues several social work licenses:

LSW: Licensed Social Worker, a bachelor's-level license.

LMSW: Licensed Master Social Worker, a master's-level license without the clinical requirements.

LISW: Licensed Independent Social Worker, an advanced license focused on non-clinical practice.

LCSW: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, the clinical license for diagnosing and treating mental health conditions.

For therapy, look for an LCSW.
