Discernment Counseling in Las Vegas: Before Anyone Files
In Nevada, a spouse files for divorce after only six weeks of residency. Decisions here move fast. Discernment counseling slows things down for couples where one partner wants to save the marriage and the other partner is leaning out.

What Is Discernment Counseling?
Discernment counseling is short-term counseling for couples on the edge of divorce. Dr. William Doherty developed the approach at the University of Minnesota for "mixed-agenda" couples, where one partner leans in and the other partner leans out.
The goal isn't to fix the marriage. The goal is clarity. You leave knowing which direction you want to go, and why.
Who Discernment Counseling Is For
- One partner wants to work on the relationship. The other partner is unsure or thinking about divorce.
- You've talked about divorce, but nobody has filed, or a filing is on hold.
- You've tried couples therapy before, and one of you lost hope.
- An affair came out, and one of you doesn't know whether to stay.
How Discernment Counseling Works
- One to five sessions. Each session usually runs 90 minutes to 2 hours.
- Each session starts with both partners together.
- Most of the time, the counselor meets with each partner alone.
- The leaning-out partner explores their doubts without pressure to stay.
- The leaning-in partner works on their own part of the problems, not on convincing the other partner.
- Each session ends together, with a choice: come back for another session, or decide.
The counselor stays neutral. No one gets talked into staying or leaving.
The Three Paths
At the end, you choose one of three paths:
Path 1: Keep things as they are
You pause the decision for now and revisit later.
Path 2: Move toward separation or divorce
You go forward with more understanding and, often, less conflict. This matters most when you share kids.
Path 3: Six months of couples therapy
Divorce goes off the table for six months while you both work on the relationship with full effort.
When Discernment Counseling Isn't a Fit
- There is abuse or fear in the relationship. Call SafeNest at (702) 646-4981 or SAFE House at (702) 564-3227, both 24 hours.
- One partner has firmly decided to divorce and won't consider any other option.
- You both already want to work on the marriage. Start couples therapy instead.
- You need help with the logistics of divorce, like custody or property. A mediator or attorney fits better.
What Discernment Counseling Costs in Las Vegas
Sessions run longer than regular therapy, so each session usually costs more. Many discernment counselors charge self-pay rates because the work centers on a decision, not a diagnosis. Ask about the price and whether the counselor bills insurance before you book. Compare a few sessions with the cost of a divorce: most couples spend far less on a few sessions of clarity.
How to Find a Discernment Counselor in Las Vegas
Ask any therapist you call:
- Have you trained in discernment counseling through the Doherty Relationship Institute?
- How many mixed-agenda couples have you worked with?
- Do you offer telehealth? Both partners need to be in Nevada during each session.
Few therapists in the valley have this training, so telehealth with a Nevada-licensed counselor widens your options.
